In 2018, the ASLH returned for the first time since 1995 to Houston, the most ethnically diverse metropolitan area in the United States. The meeting, which was held at the Hilton-Américas from November 8, 2018 to November 11, 2018, showcased a population center expected to become the nation’s third-largest city by 2025 and advanced ASLH’s further internationalization by providing a first-class opening for the discussion of legal history scholarship concerning Mexico and Latin America generally.

The meeting was sponsored by the University of Houston Law Center and the University of Houston.

The Plenary Lecture was delivered by Ariela Gross of the University of Southern California Law School and Alejandro de la Fuente of Harvard Law School.

Travel

Airports

  • George Bush Intercontinental Airport

IAH is dominated by United Airlines, but it serves all other major domestic carriers and most major international carriers as well. All five terminals, including a new international terminal, are connected by an automated people-mover and underground train.

    Public Transportation

Bus route 102 serves IAH and downtown locations. Service runs Monday through Sunday, from approximately 5 a.m. until midnight.

    Taxi Info

Taxis are available at baggage claim at Terminals A, B, C and E.The fare from IAH to downtown is approximately $52.

  • William P. Hobby Airport

HOU, the more centrally located and more manageable of the two airports, is dominated by relatively low-priced Southwest Airlines, but is also served by American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Frontier Airlines, and JetBlue Airways.

    Public Transportation

Honestly, public transportation is probably not worth the trouble, given that HOU is so close-in to Downtown Houston and that other means of transportation are relatively affordable.

    Taxi Info

Taxis are available at baggage claim at Curb Zone 3. The fare from HOU to downtown is approximately $26.

Travel Tips

  • $6 Cab Fare Anywhere Downtown

The City of Houston has authorized a flat taxi fare of $6 for all trips in the downtown area. This $6 fare applies anywhere within the Central Business District, bounded by Interstate 45, Interstate 10 and U.S. 59. No surcharges apply to the fare, which can accommodate multiple riders under the $6 total rate.

Houston has more than 2,400 taxis in its fleet. There are also 1,700 limos and town cars.

Of course, there are also Uber and Lyft.

  • Shuttles & Hotel Courtesy Vans
